When driving through Union Square, you may have seen
among the decorated buildings, the mural painted on
the Black Cherry Puppet Theater. The mural, created
by children, over-looks the Performance Garden where
puppeteers bring the magic of theatre to its audiences.
Flowering plants surround the garden and attract butterflies.
The children refer to it as the Butterfly Garden.
Created
to develop and promote the ancient art of puppetry,
the Black Cherry Puppet Theater has been performing
since 1980. This non-profit association of artists
and performers has presented over 1,500 performances
and workshops for adults and children throughout the
Mid-Atlantic region.
The
Black Cherry puppeteers create a place of magic where
some puppets are small, while others are the size
of adults. The puppets include beautifully hand-crafted
rod puppets, marionettes, shadow puppets, light and
body puppets. Traditional as well as original shows
are held.
"The
Black Cherry Puppet Theater also offers classroom
workshops for children," says co-director, Michael
Lamason. "Language arts, music, communication
and performance skills are integrated to create puppet
shows."
The Black Cherry Puppet Theater invites you to attend
their performances.
