Craving Steamed Crabs?

Nothing tops Maryland's steamed crabs and they're often the number one request made by visitors to Baltimore. We all know that a heaping platter of steamed crabs crusted with spices just can't be beat.

Known for its high quality seafood, Sea King Seafood Markets, a family owned and operated business, is the choice for most. Phil Vellines, manager of the Catonsville location, boasts about why Maryland crabs are the best.

"Maryland crabs are the best because of our blue crabs. A lot has to do with the spices and seasonings in this area," said Mr. Vellines. "There's a basic blend, then everyone adds their own twist," he continued.

Maryland gets its crabs from local crabbers. Sometimes the crabs are purchased from Louisiana, North Carolina, Delaware and Virginia. However, at this time of the year, the Maryland crabbers are supported.

Crabs are seasonal. "The crab season begins in April and runs through late September or early October," Mr. Vellines stated. "Maryland's peak is about late July through September."

Very often, when purchasing steamed crabs, the size is important to customers. Customers want the largest crabs. Mr. Vellines commented that size doesn't determine the price of crabs. "The weight rather than size is important. A large crab doesn't necessarily have to be heavy," he continued.

Sea King has a large clientele. Crabs are shipped to New York and extend all across the country. "We just shipped to Arizona and Hawaii," said Mr. Vellines. "A customer called yesterday inquiring about international shipping."

Purchasing crabs is unlike anything else purchased. For some reason, delivery expectations are unique. "Customers often ask, 'Can you hook me up?' 'Do I get any extras?'or 'We'd appreciate some extra claws please.'"

As you might imagine, Mr. Vellines suggests we remember crab houses and restaurants are businesses like other businesses and that we lower our expectations. Crabbers have increased operating expenses especially now that gas prices have increased.

When you're ready for some mouth-watering, tasty steamed crabs, head to Sea King's where the staff is always polite and patient. In fact, look around. You just might meet Phil Vellines.
