Retiring
early can sometimes
present challenges. Many sit at home and allow boredom to
set in. However, this is not so for Edna Nelson. Edna's love
for sewing and creative ability for needlework has allowed
her to expand a hobby into a business.
Edna
Nelson, originally from Venezuela, has been sewing since she
was twelve. "As a child, I enjoyed watching members of
my family sew," Edna recalls. "They taught me how
to sew, knit, crochet and do needlework. I enjoyed listening
to the laughter and wisdom they shared and admired the skill
of their stitches and design."
One-of-a-kind
garments, wall hangings, quilts and other custom-made items
finished by hand or machine are Edna's specialties.
"I
have gotten into the technological phase of needlework. I
now have a digitizing machine," says Edna.
Baby
blankets are one of Edna's best sellers. "Many customers
order the very large receiving
blankets. The blankets are monogrammed with the child's name
and birth date and trimmed with white embellishment,"
Edna comments.
"Pink
blankets are usually ordered for girls and blue for boys."
Other top requests are cushions, quilts, wall hangings, quilted
jackets and vests."
The
benefits of Edna Nelson's business are numerous. Her early
retirement allows her to make things for people who may not
have the time to make things themselves. "I enjoy making
special gifts for special people," Edna says.
