A Talented Family

How does one go about becoming a writer? Where does the inspiration come from? The answers to these questions will vary for each writer. However, Sierra Myers finds the inspiration to write from vivid emotion and sensitive awareness.

Sierra Myers, sixteen years old, has published two books—Under the Do-Rag and A Collection of Poems for Teenagers and Young Adults. Her books include historical poems as well as poems that respond to the challenges teens face today. The subjects relate to drugs, gangs, suicide, peer pressure and relationships.

Sierra has been writing since the age of 10, then later wrote for church, school and editorials for the website, Transcend Mag.com.

She has received recognition for herwriting in the National Geographic Magazine, Girls' Life Magazine (February/March, 2001) and awards by the Maryland Commission for Women and the Fuller Foundation.

Currently, Sierra works for a pharmaceutical company and Staples and plans to study medicine in the fall at St.Augustine College in North Carolina.

Sierra's book—Under the Do-Rag was illustrated by her brother, Donovan.

Donovan Myers, brother of Sierra, is a recent graduate of Edmondson High and has attended Maryland Institute's College of Art and the Baltimore School of Art. Donovan enjoys drawing, sculpting and the visual arts. He represented Maryland on BYTV (Baltimore Youth Television) for film making.

Donovan is also a rapper. He writes music, sings and has been published on two CDs. In fact, he has set up a music studio for music production. Donovan plans to attend Sheffield College of Art/ Institute.

Later this year, you'll read more about Donovan on Baltimore Knows.com. He plans to release another CD. His website, www.younghustlers.com will soon be online.

Donovan and Sierra Myers are siblings that get support, encouragement and assistance from their mother, Carmen Lashley.

Carmen Lashley, mother of Sierra and Donovan, is an author and has published Buds of Promise and Psychoses of Love. She is in the process of publishing two other books—Listen to the Voices and Soul Lots to Tell.

Ms. Lashley involves herself with community outreach programs by promoting and marketing authors' books. One author Ms. Lashley promoted is Nikkia Kendricks who authored the book, Poetic Confessions. She also publishes bookmarks, invitations and party supplies.
